With summer approaching, this is a good time to monitor irrigation, mulch beds and check for pests and diseases in San Diego gardens. Here are some San Diego gardening tips to help keep your yard healthy and bountiful.

Plant Fun Fruits

Try adding some exotic fruit to your yard. There are many options for San Diego gardens. You can plant citrus like Buddha’s Hand Citron with its fingered fruits, Kaffir Lime or Blood Orange. Or, if you are in a frost-free area, add one of the many varieties of banana you won’t find in the grocery store.

There are also some waterwise fruits that do well here. Jojoba is a heat loving, evergreen shrub with “goatnut” fruits. Pomegranate, Pineapple Guava, Mulberry and Jujube are some other low-water fruit choices for San Diego gardens.

Take Part in Pollinator Week June 21 – 27

Pollinator week is an annual, international event supporting pollinator health. Here are some things you can do in your San Diego garden to help pollinators. Plant pollinator friendly natives and other non-invasive plants in clusters. Reduce or eliminate pesticides. Create a bee friendly garden. Support your local beekeepers, and spread the word about pollinators. For more information, go to www.pollinator.org.

Feed the Birds

There was a salmonellosis outbreak among songbirds in California and other parts of the country this winter and spring. Some groups are asking us to remove bird feeders since they can help spread it. If you don’t remove them, then they’re suggesting that we clean them often.

To help make up for the loss of feeders, try planting more native plants that will provide food for local birds. Check out Calscape’s Garden Planner and Audubon’s Native Plants Database for native plants that grow in your area and provide bird food and habitat.
