Summer’s here in San Diego gardens, and the weather is warming up. This is still a good time to plant subtropicals, summer annuals and vegetables, but hold off putting most plants in the ground until fall when temperatures drop.
With all of the May gray and June gloom we’ve had lately, it’s hard to believe that summer’s heat is almost here. To protect your San Diego gardens, make sure your irrigation is working properly and add several inches of mulch to your garden beds.
San Diego gardens are in full bloom this month. Enjoy the beauty. It’s payback for all that hard work. The rains are over, so check your irrigation to make sure your plants are getting enough water. And don’t forget to pull weeds! If you can get the weeds out before they set seed, you’ll have a lot fewer next year.

While many people are waiting for snow to melt or weather to warm so they can get back into their gardens, we San Diego gardeners are lucky to enjoy our gardens year-round. Spring is just around the corner, and there’s plenty to do now to get ready for it.
While we pray for rain in our San Diego gardens this month, continue to add cool-season annuals and vegetables, plant native wildflowers, and pull those pesky weeds.
November is still a great time to add plants to your San Diego garden. It’s also a good time to add or renew mulch. That will help keep weeds down once our seasonal rains have started. And if we’re lucky enough to get rain in November, it might be time to adjust your irrigation.
