2019 Juried Biennial

Location: Carlsbad, Cannon Art Gallery, 1775 Dove Ln
The Cannon Art Gallery 2019 Juried Biennial was juried by Robert L. Pincus, a renowned art critic and writer, and Maria Mingalone, the Executive Director of the Oceanside Museum of Art. The exhibition features 60 works by 46 artists who live or work in San Diego County.
Over the past 20 years, the William D. Cannon Art Gallery’s Juried Exhibitions have become an important showcase for the work of both emerging and mid-career artists in San Diego County. Since 1999, more than 500 artists have appeared in the Gallery’s juried exhibitions.

The San Dieguito River Park hosts a variety of events throughout the year, from volunteer activities to bird walks.

Trail Volunteer Event Carlsbad
January 5
8:30 – 11:30 AM
Location: Carlsbad, La Costa Glen Trail
The volunteer trail work at La Costa Glen Trail will include:
- Weed removal
- Vegetation trimming
- Trail erosion repairs
- Litter pickup
The city will provide new volunteers with a short training on use of tools. The city will also provide shovels, McClouds, rakes, water and snacks. Please wear closed-toe shoes, sunscreen and gloves. In the event of rain, the event will be canceled.
OMA Free First Sunday
January 6

Location: Oceanside, Oceanside Museum of Art, 704 Pier View Way
Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) is a cultural jewel located in downtown Oceanside with a view of the Pacific Ocean and the historic Oceanside Pier. In addition to contemporary art exhibitions, OMA offers classes, lectures, concerts, docent tours, and community events. The museum is a gathering place where friends meet to share and enjoy rich cultural experiences.
Free Admission
Admission is free on Sunday, January 6 from 12 to 5 pm. Come embrace creativity and enjoy the exhibitions.
Moon Over Buffalo at North Coast Repertory Theatre
January 9 – February 3
Location: Solana Beach, 987 Lomas Santa Fe Dr, Suite D
Comic genius Ken Ludwig (Lend Me A Tenor), a master of old-fashioned knockabout farces, created Moon Over Buffalo. This is a laugh-a-minute show-within-a-show, with everyone in the wrong costumes and reading the wrong lines. An evening of mayhem filled with comic inventions and running gags, this is a wild and wacky comedy. Be prepared to leave the theater exhausted from laughter.
Poway Community Park’s Winter Festival

Experience the magic and charm of winter like never before! Join us for Winter Festival on Friday, January 11 from 5:00-9:00pm and Saturday, January 12 from 3:30-8:30pm at Poway Community Park.
Feel snow between your fingers while sledding down the snow hill. Smell roasting marshmallows as you devour delicious s’mores. Experience the wind in your hair skating around the synthetic ice rink, and enjoy a variety of vendors and their sensational products. Lights will twinkle, as music sets the tone and laughter fills the air. The Winter Festival brings to life all of the charm and entertainment of a cold-mountain town. And it’s all set right in Poway. Bring one or bring all! There’s something for everyone!
Free Shuttles
FREE shuttles to and from the event will be available from two locations. They are, Poway City Hall parking lot, located at 13325 Civic Center Drive; and the Boys and Girls Club parking lot at 12988 Bowron Road.
Kids in the Garden

Location: Vista, Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, 1270 Vale Terrace Dr
Alta Vista Botanical Gardens is now in our tenth year of getting kids outdoors. They’ll discover their environment, enjoy nature, dig into gardening, learn about natural resources, and share art and music.
This month the Kids in the Garden class we will learn about the homes that animals make. Then they will walk the Gardens to find their habitats out in nature. Should be another fun day in the Gardens and nature! The Kids in the Garden class emphasizes hands-on discovery and fun for all!
Registration
Class fee is $5 per child, and $5 per adult Garden entry – payable to Farmer Jones at the class. Pre-registration required.
Manzanar: The Wartime Photographs of Ansel Adams & Wendy Maruyama: Executive Order 9066

Location: Escondido, California Center for the Arts, 340 N Escondido Blvd
An intimate look through the lens of celebrated photographer, Ansel Adams, at the daily life in Manzanar. Manzanar was one of the ten Japanese-American incarceration camps in the U.S. during World War II. Concurrently on view is work by Wendy Maruyama who looks at the internment camps with a contemporary eye.
Encinitas Music By The Sea Concert Series

Los Angeles Ensemble
Los Angeles Ensemble – Joanna Lee, violin, Tanner Menees, viola, Bingxia Lu, cello, Sung Chang, piano, Esther Lee, piano. Formed in 2015, the quartet was awarded First Prize at the International Music Competition Grand Prize Virtuoso in London, and Fourth Prize at the Schoenfeld International String Competition in China. Its members are winners of international competitions and have trained in leading music schools worldwide.

Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon And Half Marathon
January 18 – 20
Location: Carlsbad, 2525 El Camino Real
About 8,000 runners and walkers from all over the United States and many foreign countries are expected to participate in the 28th edition of the Carlsbad Marathon & Half Marathon on Sunday, January 20. The event has been sponsored by Tri-City Medical Center since 2010.
The 26.2 and 13.1-mile courses begin at The Shoppes at Carlsbad. They pass by the Buena Vista Lagoon in the early miles, setting the event’s naturalistic tone. The course and surroundings soon pick up the beat as participants make their way through spectator-packed Carlsbad Village Carlsbad Village is a quaint but popular mix of restaurants, shops and hotels. Mile three exposes stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, providing a gorgeous backdrop as rolling hills carry runners and walkers past sandy beaches and rolling surf. In addition to the marathon and half marathon, there is also a 5K run. Kids’ activities, including a Marathon Mile Race, are on Saturday, January 19th at LEGOLAND.
Entertainment at every mile, enthusiastic volunteers and thousands of spectators are sure to keep participants motivated throughout both courses. Once crossing the finish line, participants are presented with a dazzling finisher’s medal, Mylar blanket and Nom Nom food bag. After the finish, there’s a festival that includes live music, refreshments and a beer garden for those 21 and older.

Tidepooling Adventure with Birch Aquarium

Visit a local tide pool to learn how these amazing habitats and their inhabitants truly survive between a rock and a hard place.
The optimal season for tidepooling is November – March when minus tides reveal wider beaches and tide pools teeming with life. During those months, you can sign up for a Tidepooling Adventure. At our adventures, trained naturalists will show you how to discover the wonderful world of tide pools. Ages 2+. Under 15 must be accompanied by a paid adult.
Pre-purchase Required
Pre-purchase is required. Birch Aquarium Members: $15, Public: $18. Tidepooling Adventures do not meet at Birch Aquarium.

Farmers Insurance Open

This is the 67th year a PGA TOUR event has been held in San Diego, beginning with the San Diego Open in 1952. For 56 straight years, The Century Club of San Diego has been the local non-profit organization for the Tournament. 2019 marks the 52nd time the event is being held at Torrey Pines Golf Course and the eighth year of Farmers Insurance sponsorship of the Tournament.
