What is SCAD?
Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD) is the #1 cause of a heart attack in women under age 50, pregnant women and new moms. SCAD occurs more often in women than men. It is a type of a heart attack not associated with the typical risk factors of heart disease such as high blood pressure or plaque. Unlike a typical heart attack most people hear about, SCAD is relatively uncommon and often impacts younger, otherwise healthy individuals. It happens when a coronary artery tears, which can cause a heart attack, abnormal heart rhythms and sudden death. Research is needed to answer fundamental questions such as what causes SCAD and what are the best treatment options.
