Museum MonthMuseum Month: Half-Off Admission

Arts, entertainment and culture collide for Macy’s Museum Month in San Diego. This February the San Diego Museum Council and Macy’s have teamed up again for Museum Month, giving patrons a chance to discover what’s new at 45 area museums with savings only seen once a year.

Participants can pick up a Museum Month Pass at any area Macy’s store to enjoy half-off admission to all of the participating museums through the entire month of February. Passes will be available beginning February 1 at all San Diego, Temecula and Imperial Valley Macy’s.


Mitchell Thorp Run WalkMitchell Thorp Foundation 5K Run/Walk

Location: Carlsbad, Poinsettia Park, 6600 Hidden Valley

The run/walk benefits warrior children battling life-threatening illnesses, diseases and disorders. The event Starts at 8:30 a.m. The course is a mostly flat, beautiful park with one hill outside the park for runners. Walkers can stay in the park with three loops to make up 5K, or choose the run course with one loop in and out of the park.

MiraCosta College is kicking off Black History Month activities with the fifth annual Umoja Program fundraising concert.

Join us for a dynamic evening of entertainment hosted by Daran Howard with music by Mark Aston and Friends and comedy by Doug Williams.

Tickets: $20; Students: $10. Tickets can be purchased online.

Proceeds will benefit the MiraCosta College Umoja Program scholarship fund designed to increase the educational outcomes of African-American and other students.

Fishing, prizes, entertainment, games, casting contest, a free barbecue lunch and more! Join the City of Poway, Mike Long and Captain Ron Baker on Saturday, February 3, for an exciting day of fun and prizes at the FREE, Annual Youth Fishing Derby!

Freshly stocked with 1,500 pounds of rainbow trout, the lake will be open only to youth ages 15 and younger from 6:00 AM-12:00 PM. Winners must be present to claim prizes at the awards ceremony, which is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM. Participants must check-in at the registration tables to receive their wristbands before fishing that morning. Information: (858) 668-4772.

The Cardiff Kook Run 5K, 10K and Costume Contest is a celebration of the greatest community in the most amazing town on the map. And remember, it’s on Super Bowl Sunday!

The course starts under the world famous “Encinitas” sign on historic HWY 101 in beautiful Encinitas, California. This scenic loop passes by the famous “Cardiff Kook” statue (The Magic Carpet Ride), rises above some of the most popular surf breaks in the world and heads down to Cardiff State Beach.

The 28th Annual San Diego Jewish Film Festival will showcase 37 feature length films from around the world – each one carefully curated into this year’s collection due to outstanding qualifies that we feel represent the best of contemporary Jewish film.

There are 15 documentaries, 22 narratives along with 21 shorts. Some of our films will offer insight into Jewish values and identity as well as those of other cultures. Some films will entertain you – and each one has the potential to generate thought-provoking discussion.

The volunteer trail work at Batiquitos North Shore will include weed removal, vegetation trimming, trail erosion repairs and litter pickup.

The city will provide new volunteers with a short training on use of tools. Additionally, they will also provide shovels, McClouds, rakes, water and snacks. Please wear closed-toe shoes, sunscreen and gloves. In the event of rain, the event will be canceled.


Oceanside Valentine BikeOceanside Valentine Bike Ride and Ferris Wheel

The City of Oceanside Parks and Recreation is hosting their annual Valentine Family Bike Ride on February 10. They are also bringing a ferris wheel to the beach on the 10th and 11th. The bike ride is free. Ferris wheel rides are $5 per person.

Participate in the Valentine Family Bike Ride on February 10th! Participants will meet at the Junior Seau Pier Amphitheater at 9am and bike along the San Luis Rey Bike Trail to the Alex Road Skate Park (approx. 3.7 miles one way). The total round trip is 7.4 miles. Bike helmets required.

Please dress up in Valentine’s theme outfits. There will be a costume contest following the ride at approximately 11 am. This event is a free.

Despite political, economic and natural upheavals during much of Haiti’s history, Haitians have developed a unique culture. This includes art and music that speaks to the expressiveness, vitality and indomitable spirit of the people of this small island nation. This exhibition highlights the stunning private collection of Carlsbad resident Lawrence Kent. Featuring more than 45 works from the 1940s to present, the Kent Collection illustrates the diverse and distinct characteristics of Haiti’s visual traditions.

Somang & Friends will be performing on February 16. This includes Somang Jeagal on piano, Kyoumg-Eun Choi on cello, Beth Nam on piano, and Jungwon Choi as soprano.

Somang was the Grand Prize winner in the 61st Washington International Competition for Piano and Los Angeles International Liszt Competition. He will be joined by cellist Kyoumg-Eun Choi and soprano Jungwon Choi, and will perform four-hand piano with pianist Kyung Eun Choi, who received a Doctorate degree from The Juilliard School.

5K Paw Walk in the Garden

Location: Encinitas, San Diego Heritage Museum, 450 Quail Gardens Dr

The San Diego Botanic Garden is teaming up with the Rancho Coastal Humane Society for our sixth annual “5K Paw Walk in the Garden.” Both organizations will be benefiting from this event. Participants will follow a 5K walk through the 37-acre garden with their dog(s) in tow.

The route winds through our spectacular garden areas including California Native Plants, Australia, the Canary Islands, Hawaii, bamboo, tropical fruit, and palm canyon. Due to the construction at the Hamilton Children’s Garden, we will be starting this event at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum (across Ecke Ranch Road from Hamilton Children’s Garden).

There will be pet products, food (for people), treats (for dogs), lots of great information for dog lovers, and (of course) dogs and puppies! Cost: $14 – $32.

Hosting the evening is Germany’s Gypsy Jazz Legend Lulo Reinhardt. Joining Reinhardt is Canadian contemporary sensation and YouTube star, Calum Graham. International Guitar Night also welcomes Poland’s innovative composer/guitarist, Marek Pasieczny. Finally, rounding out the tour is the only guitarist to ever win First Prize at the world’s top Classical and Fingerstyle competitions, American Michael Chapdelaine. Cost: $30 – $40.


Tidepooling AdventureTidepooling Adventure with Birch Aquarium

Visit a local tide pool to learn how these amazing habitats and their inhabitants truly survive between a rock and a hard place.

The optimal season for tidepooling is November – March when minus tides reveal wider beaches and tide pools teeming with life. During those months, you can sign up for a Tidepooling Adventure where our trained naturalists will show you how to tread lightly during your visit and help you discover the wonderful world of tide pools. Ages 2+. Minors must be accompanied by a paid adult.

Pre-purchase is required. Birch Aquarium Members: $13, Public: $16. Tidepooling Adventures do not meet at Birch Aquarium.
