Lux Art Institute Welcomes Resident Artist Xawery Wolski

Xawery Wolski was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1960 and currently lives and works in Mexico City. Educated both stateside and abroad, Wolski’s work has been exhibited internationally and is included in the permanent collections of Fonds National d’Art Contemporain (Paris, France), National Library of France (Paris), Mordena Museet (Stockholm, Sweeden), and Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, among others.
Wolski’s residency provides him the perfect opportunity to produce a new sculptural work related to the idea of a dress, a consistent sculptural theme within his work. The concept of the dress continues to fascinate Wolski, and Lux’s locality would allow him to utilize his favorite material— local clay that gives rise to terra cotta. His new piece created in residence will be the creation of several hundreds of elements—dried, fired, sewn together using strong thread into the form of a dress. Once complete, this piece would accompany the other works on display, thereby representing Wolski’s practice that is informed by travel. This addition would also act as a link between the exhibited works that were inspired by his trips to Poland, India, France, Mexico, Thailand, Peru, Italy, and Myanmar, among others. Currently, the United States of America is missing from this link, and Wolski’s residency piece will bind the US to his oeuvre.
The Artist Pavilion is open 1:00 to 5:00 pm Thursday and Friday and 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday.
Space, Structure, Light: The Art Of Russell Forester

Russell Forester was one of southern California’s most innovative postwar modernist artists. As an architect, he was an artist; as a painter and a sculptor, his architectural background permeates his work. At the height of a successful career, Forester made the decision to close his architectural practice to dedicate his time exclusively to painting and sculpture. Trained at the Institute of Design, Chicago, he was greatly influenced by the multi-disciplinary edict of the Bauhaus.
This retrospective’s title springs from the repetitive elements used in Forester’s wide body of artwork. Drawn, illuminated, or stitched with thread, innumerable and deliberate dots appear throughout every facet of his pieces, defining the space in every medium and on every surface. Similarly, pen strokes and rows of lights form lines and repeating structures. Light is used both figuratively and literally in rhythmic patterns over the surfaces of both sculptures and drawings.
Front Porch Gallery Presents ‘Art Telling: Where We Are’

Please join us for Where We Are, with Art Telling, a group of eight visionary artists creating an intricate visual conversation from a common set of words. Using prepositions as their inspiration, Art Telling explores the words “between, around, through, below, opposite, among, within, beyond, adjacent and above” through a variety of mediums including: jewelry, colored pencil, metal sculpture, painting and mixed media.
Sikes Saturday Series

Join us for the Sikes Saturday Series! This is an educational series for kids and adults, held at the Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead adjacent to the park and trails of the San Dieguito River Park. Programs are approximately one and one half hours in length.
Each program has a limited number of seats so we need to know you are attending. The cost per person (adults and children) is $5.00 (or $15.00 to attend the Valentine Teas event which includes tea, sandwiches, and sweets.) Registering is easy. Visit Sikes Adobe website, pick the program you would like to attend, enter the number attending, enter a little info about yourself, pay with a credit card and await your confirmation email – please bring this confirmation with you the day of the event. Encinitas Music By The Sea Concert Series

Under the artistic direction of Laura Schmieder, talented local and international artists are selected at the Beverly Hills National Auditions and presented monthly in concert in three cities: Encinitas, Torrance and Beverly Hills. There are nine concerts from September 2016 through June 2017. Hernandez Giacopuzzi Duo featuring Juan-Miguel Hernandez on viola and Jacopo Giacopuzzi on piano are each top prize-winners of many international competitions. The duo will play on Friday, January 13, in the intimate and acoustically superb Encinitas Library Community Room with its expansive view of the Pacific Ocean.

Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon And Half Marathon

The 26th edition of the Carlsbad Marathon & Half Marathon sponsored by Tri-City Medical Center since 2010 is scheduled for Sunday, January 15, 2017.
The 26.2 and 13.1-mile out-and-back courses begin at The Shoppes at Carlsbad and pass by the Buena Vista Lagoon in the early miles, setting the event’s naturalistic tone. The course and surroundings soon pick up the beat as participants make their way through spectator-packed Carlsbad Village, a quaint but popular mix of restaurants, shops and hotels. Mile three exposes stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, providing an inspiring sight and gorgeous backdrop as rolling hills carry runners and walkers past sandy beaches and rolling surf.
Live bands at every mile, enthusiastic volunteers and thousands of spectators are sure to keep participants motivated throughout both courses, offering encouragement all the way to the finish. Once crossing the finish line, participants are presented with a dazzling finisher’s medal, Mylar blanket and Nom Nom food bag before entering a celebratory festival that includes live music, refreshments and a beer garden for those 21 and older.

LEGOLAND® California is host to a special, 1-mile fun run for kids of all ages and abilities. Before the doors open to the public, they’re opened for us to enjoy the sights and sounds of LEGOLAND®! Participants can run, walk, skip or stroll, or even be pushed in a stroller or carried on a back as they wind through the park and back out to the finish line. Each finisher is presented with a shiny finisher’s medal and treated to light refreshments and family-friendly entertainment. The event concludes at 10 a.m. with the opening of LEGOLAND® and SEA LIFE™ Aquarium where registered participants ages 3 to 12 can enter the park for free and moms and dads can enter for 50 percent off admission. Tidepooling Adventure with Birch Aquarium

Visit a local tide pool to learn how these amazing habitats and their inhabitants truly survive between a rock and a hard place.
The optimal season for tidepooling is November – March when minus tides reveal wider beaches and tide pools teeming with life. During those months, you can sign up for a Tidepooling Adventure where our trained naturalists will show you how to tread lightly during your visit and help you discover the wonderful world of tide pools. Ages 2+. Under 15 must be accompanied by a paid adult.
Pre-purchase is required. Birch Aquarium Members: $13, Public: $16. Tidepooling Adventures do not meet at Birch Aquarium.
Western Surfing Association Championship Tour

This is the 65th year a PGA TOUR event has been held in San Diego, beginning with the San Diego Open in 1952. For 54 straight years, the Century Club of San Diego has been the local non-profit organization for the tournament. 2017 also marks the 50th time the event is being held at Torrey Pines Golf Course and the seventh year of Farmers Insurance sponsorship of the tournament.
